Help - Air Wound Inductors

Using the tool - Inductor Design

  1. Click numbers then press the button for the data field you wish to update. For example, enter "2.0" then press the "L" button to specify the desired inductance in micro-Henries (uH).
  2. You can specify inductance or number of turns, the coil diameter and coil length. Use the RND key to round the TURNS entry to the closest integer.
  3. If the coil's Turns Per Inch is constant, set the TPI field and check the "constant" check box.
  4. Use the select menu to choose the wire size. Wire size determines the maximum current the design can handle
  5. A design report is presented at the bottom of the page. The report summarizes the current design. You want to verify that the design is realizable by comparing design parameters with the maximum limits listed in the report.
  6. Specifying frequency computes the corresponding impedance at that frequency and the coil's unloaded Q.

Example 1

  1. For a new design, we need to select a wire size. Enter your expected maximum RMS current (e.g.: .1 A). Then select a wire size from the "Wire" dropdown box (e.g.: #22). Picking a wire size updates the Turns/Inch to the maximum value possible for that wire (36). (If you use a wire with additional insulation, you will need to enter the TPI of that particular wire.) Check the report to verify that the wire current rating meets your expected current otherwise select a larger wire (smaller wire number).
  2. Set the diameter of the coil (e.g. .75 inches).
  3. Specify your desired inductance value (eg. 1 uH). The Turns and Length fields will be updated to 5.985 and .166 respectively. Click the RND key to round the turns number (to 6). This will update the predicted inductance value and length fields.
  4. You can also specify the Turns number and see the predicted inductance and length numbers.
  5. You can specify a Frequency, F, and the resulting impedance is presented in the report window at the bottom of the page. The report summarizes the current design and shows the data clearly.

Example 2

  1. If you have a 2 inch diameter coil that is 1 inch long and has 6 turns, Uncheck the Turns/Inch Constant checkbox. Then you can enter those numbers in the appropriate fields and see the inductance is 1.89 uH.
